A case study question in the practice exam states the following:

> The three-level residence requires an ADA-compliant passenger elevator. The architect should understand the elevator requirements to accommodate the client’s parent, who uses a wheelchair.
>
> Which of the following is required? **Check the three that apply.**

(bolded items below are identified as correct per the exam question solution)

**1. Elevator Call buttons shall be raised or flush**
**2. Door Sensors – Door sensors must re-open the elevator doors without making contact with the obstructing object or person.**
3. Elevator doors shall be horizontal sliding or car gate type.
4. Floor Levels - Audible signals shall sound once for the up direction and once for the down direction
5. Emergency control buttons shall have their centerlines 40 inches minimum above the finish floor.
**6. Elevator cars shall provide a clear width 36 inches (915 mm) minimum and a clear depth 48 inches (1220 mm) minimum.**

Why is number 3 not one of the correct answers? Is it because Elevator Section 407.3.1 supersedes section 409.3? Section 409 Private Residence Elevators under 409.3 states:

Thank you in advance!

I had trouble with this same question, it doesn’t make sense, the code is clear. There was another one along these lines that talked about elevator depth which like this one, I had no clue how to answer since the options provided where not consistent with any of the material in the ADA.

Hi @emoreno and welcome to the ARE Community! Let’s see if one of our expert architects can help clarify this question. @coachchrishopstock do you mind jumping in?
