Hi, can one of the coaches please clarify if the 4 storage rooms in this scenario would be added together to determine +/- the 10% of the total building square footage or can these rooms be considered individually which I believe is why the correct answer is no separation needed.

\*An architect is performing a code analysis for a new 15,700-square-foot building which will predominately be classified as type A occupancy. The building will have four 390-square-foot storage rooms that will be type S-2 occupancy. \*

_Which of the following statements regarding the store rooms is true?_

_Must exceed 10% of the total floor area allowed by the height/area table and does not need to be separated from the main area by a fire separation_
_Incorrect. If occupancies in a building are too large to be considered accessory, the building is considered to have mixed occupancy._

_Cannot exceed 10% of the total floor area allowed by the height/area table and does not need to be separated from the main area by a fire separation_
\*Correct. This situation is considered accessory use because the S-2 occupancy is less than 10% of the A occupancy. No separation is required between accessory occupancies and the main occupancy. \*

_Cannot exceed 10% of the total floor area allowed by the height/area table and needs to be separated from the main area by a fire separation_
\*Incorrect. This situation is considered an accessory use. No separation is required between accessory occupancies and the main occupancy. \*

_Must exceed 10% of the total floor area allowed by the height/area table and needs to be separated from the main area by a fire separation_
_Incorrect. If occupancies in a building are too large to be considered accessory, the building is considered to have mixed occupancy._

Thank you

Hi @clent - this question is tricky!
There are two considerations covered in the answer choices - whether the space must, or cannot, exceed 10% of the floor area allowed, and whether or not the space must be separated from the main area.
Since the 4 storage rooms, taken together, equal 9.9% of the main space, they don’t require fire separation from it and are considered accessory spaces. Therefore, B is the only choice where both statements are true.
C is incorrect even though the first part of the statement is true - the spaces do not require separation in the given scenario because they’re less than 10% of the main space.
