**Summary:**

Raising the standard of care elevates risk exposure; architects must rely on stronger insurance coverage and financial safeguards to manage that increased liability

Yet if you pick the answer that specifically says **“ ~~Higher professional liability protections” your wrong! Seems contradicting~~ **

Welcome to the Black Spectacles Community @kylesces! Thanks for writing in.

I totally get your concern, as it does feel contradictory at first. The key distinction is that while a higher standard of care increases liability exposure, professional liability insurance typically won’t cover liability that results from voluntarily agreeing to a higher-than-normal standard. So _higher professional liability protections_ isn’t considered a reliable safeguard in this scenario. That’s why the best protection becomes financial safeguards like an emergency fund, since insurance may exclude elevated standards of care.

I’ve refined the question summary to provide more clarity and direct connections to the correct answer.

Hope this helps!

It’s mentioned that evidence-based design would raise the standard of care. Unlike the other options in the question, like BIM (which can be directly equated to the use of Revit), I’m still fuzzy on what EBD constitutes and _how_ architects practice it. What does EBD look like?

@wan.andrea**Evidence-based design (EBD)** means making design decisions based on credible research and measurable outcomes rather than intuition alone. In practice, this often looks like using studies to inform decisions such as patient room layouts that reduce infections, daylighting that improves occupant well-being, or classroom designs that enhance learning. Because architects are intentionally relying on research, courts may expect them to apply that knowledge appropriately, which can raise the standard of care.

Refer to _The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice, 15th Edition, 14.4 Evidence-Based Design_ (starting on page 937).

Happy studying!
