# PDD - IBC separating rate between occupancy

Hi,  
I came across to this question related to separate rated between program, asking for which program require a rated fire wall between it and every other occupancies groups. Looking at 508.4 it seems Residential does NOT required between it but 707.3 requires min 2.  
I am a little bit confused how to interpret that question and find charts.

Any help would be good appreciated.

Hey @ruben.cabanillas thanks for the question!

Take a look at table 508.4, and go down to Residential (R) on the left-most column. Reading across, R occupancies require separation from every _other_ type of occupancy - there’s either a number in the chart (indicating the required rating, in hours) or an ‘NP’ indicating that those two occupancies cannot be next to each other.  
Not that no rating is required between two R-occupancies - however, the question is asking about required ratings between different occupancy groups.
