Why if Type I-A or I-B then no need for 3-hour horizontal separation between podium and upper residential? Where at IBC I can see that (with explanation)?

@Mei-Po.Leung The 3-hour horizontal assembly is specifically required when you’re using podium construction to treat the building as two separate buildings under IBC §510.2 (Horizontal Building Separation Allowance).

If the entire building is Type I-A or I-B, you typically don’t need to use §510.2 at all, because you’re no longer relying on the podium “two-building” allowance to make the design compliant. Without using §510.2, that special 3-hour podium separation requirement doesn’t apply.

Hope this helps!
