How do you calculate lumber quantity into board feet? Can you provide an example?
@linda Thanks for the question!
A board foot measurement is based on nominal lumber dimensions and one board foot is defined as a volume of lumber 12 square inches in nominal cross-sectional area and 1 foot long. So a 1 x 12 that is 6 feet long would be equal to 6 board feet. This is useful as lumber in the United States is priced by the board foot.
You can find more information on lumber sizes in Chapter 3 of Fundamentals of Building Construction by Edward Allen and Joseph Iano.
