In the PA Practice Exam #1 we’re asked to recommend an appropriate construction system to handle a parking garage with 55’ spans. According to BS, a precast system is not compatible because, while the beams can span 65’, the slabs can only span 45’.
I don’t understand why this is an issue here.
We could just support the slabs with beams at ~40’ OC
and be well within the safety margins of this kind of system.
For a question like this, try not to add layers of complexity and utilize the information that is given to you directly. Our spans are 55’ as the question states. The beams can easily manage that, but if the slab can only span 45’, it will not be able to span the necessary distance. Sure, you could say let’s use 40’ spans, but that is not what the question is asking.
