Live Load Reduction

I’m having a hard time understanding when a live load reduction per IBC 1607 would be advantageous or useful. Does it have to do with sizing members more efficiently, size and cost-wise?

Thank you!

Hi @desireegcurrie !

That’s a great question, thanks for asking. You are correct, a live load reduction is most advantageous because it reduces the size of the member thus being more cost-effective since a smaller member uses less material. It’s also more efficient because it allows more room for duct work, etc. between the member and the ceiling if that’s one of the concerns in the design.
